Our little game for her birthday

Lynn wanted a nerf gun set she saw at BHG toy section since the beginning of this year. I causually agreed to buy for her as a birthday gift, thinking that she may change her mind as the months go by. However, she didn't, so finally towards late sept, when there is a 20% discount  storewide, I bought it but hide it and told her that she can only have it on her birthday.  Last week, I agreed to let her have it on Wed (which is tomorrow), which is the day her exams will end.  Then over the weekend, we decided that we will play "solve the riddle to find your present" game!

I made 3 riddles.  Solving riddle one will lead her to the hiding place of riddle 2, which is the fridge. Solving riddle 2 will lead her finding riddle 3 in the piano chair. Finally, solving riddle 3 will lead her to her present which is placed behind the door of my mum's room! Took an hour doing this, hope she will have fun and have fond memories of het 8th bd!
Sticked riddle one, facing inwards, on the shoe rack door
Riddle 2 in Dora lunch box in the fridge
Final riddle is in the piano chair
Finally, the present behind the door

Am I ready?

I remember that there was once I wrote about November and autumn in my blog; today, I'm going to write about October.  Oct 2014, to be specific.

Before Oct started, I studied the calendar, to familiarise myself with the work-weeks of the month, because I'm starting a new job.  It was supposed to be a long month with 5 work weeks.  Luckily, the first work week started on a Wed (1st Oct is a Wed), there's a public holiday on the Monday of the second week (6th Oct),  and another public holiday on the Wed of the 4th week (22nd Oct).  Still, like all my past experiences, the first month of a new job moved extremely slowly.  Oct 2014 felt like the longest month of my life yet.  This month is so unlike the rest, which just simply whizzed by.

Lynn is sick again.  This must be the 5th or 6th time this year.  In the first week of Sep, Lynn missed a term 3 maths test that is suppose to constitute 25% of her final grade.  I felt very guilty about it, because the test dates were already made known at the beginning of year, but I did not take note of it.  Soon after that, I studied the school time table for term 4, and quickly familiarise myself with her various exam dates, spread throughout the whole of October, too.  As of today, the EL and CL composition and oral tests are over.  There are 3 more papers next week Mon to Wed.  I hope she will make a speedy recovery.

Today is lili's birthday.  Joc and I treated her to dinner last Sat day.  I though we will take photo, but end up we didn't.  It's the last significant big 4 birthday that I will be celebrating this year.

What's the main topic in my blog today?  Actually it's about a very serious topic, which is death.  I  believe everyone has thought about this subject.  There are many philosophical quotes about this topic, that encourage people to embrace life, and to not fear death.  Some examples are
"Life is short, so live life to the fullest everyday"
"人生短短几十年,活着开心最重要"
"人生无常 世事难料 珍惜当下"

I ever wonder, if I'm suddenly stricken with terminal illness, will my reaction be the "I am ready" kind, or the "why me??" kind.

A few weeks back, there was an event to drive public awareness on end-of-life matters in front of TPY library.
http://www.lienfoundation.org/pdf/news/2014/BSN%20Presser%20Final.pdf
I stopped by briefly, pick up a brochure, and read it on my way home.  I started making mental check list of things I should have done, so that I am ready for any sudden misfortune.  I have sufficient insurance (checked), i have done my will (checked); I have not done AMD (reminded myself to get it done), I have not done LPA, and...

While I'm going through the mental notes, I suddenly realised that there is still one more important thing that I've not done, which is, saying "I love you", and "Thank you" to many who matters to me.  Although I say that to Lynn almost everyday, I did not say this to many others whom I love too.  I don't think I will go up to each and everyone of them to say so (that will certainly cause misunderstanding and panic!).  I'm just going to document this here, in this posting, in my blog.

I'm happy and satisfied with my life, which I share with all my loved ones.  Even if it ends tomorrow, I have no regrets.  No matter if I live up to your expectations or not, I'm at peace with myself.  Thank you for the wonderful journey together.  I cherish every today

My dear friends, thanks for the wonderful 40th celebration.  Hi Dad, I love you.  Hi Lynn, felt hurt when your daddy doesn't seem to appreciate my efforts to help you with revision for your exams.  Good night, 22nd Oct, 2014..

Tokyo Sep 2014

Took an extremely short holiday in Tokyo, from 18 to 21 Sep.  There are a few reasons why I took this holiday
(I) Because my Kris flyer miles are expiring.  I have chalked up >100k miles over the past few years flying to US and Germany, Scotland and China.  Although I have been taking holiday trips, such as Seoul and Taiwan, but it was always cheaper to take budget airline and SQ with friends.  Finally, Sep is my last chance to redeem, so I asked my friends and then my sister if anyone wants to travel for free, but got to pay for airport tax.  The airport tax came up to $760 for 2 persons for SQ to Tokyo.

(II) Because I wanted to "fix" my last day.  I have more than 3 weeks of annual leave that I wanted to clear instead of cash out.  With a trip planned, I can then negotiate with my boss to release me for the full length of annual leave.  In the end, I agreed to "extend" a week, but the week is only 3 working days, because my trip span over Thurs and Fri.    It makes him (my boss) happy, so the "trick" works.

I asked a few close friends before I turn the offer to WS and Yin.  It was Yin who eventually took up the offer.

Yin is not my usual traveling partner.  In fact, it was more than 20 years ago that we took a family trip together.

I remembered that when Yin came back from Australia from her studies (maybe in our early 20s), she told me that she find our "姐妹缘分很浅", that we do not spend much time together.  I had never thought about it that way previously.  I told her that I don't feel so, that although we do not spend much time together, I feel that we were close at heart.  Now, almost another 20 years on, especially after this trip, I had to admit that we do lead rather parallel life styles.  So, this is a trip that I will always cherish.

On day 1, we were mostly spending time together.  From the check in, to breakfast, to chatting and watching movies on the plane, to making queries at the lost luggage counter, than to purchase and travel on the train to our hotel, grocery shopping at Shinagawa station, and finally check in, we spent a whole day just doing stuff together.

On day 2, we took a day trip to Mt Fuji.  It is the very typical day trip, that covers Mt Fuji, Lake Ashi, Mt Komagatake, Hakone National Park, with return by bullet train to Tokyo.  I have done the same exact trip in 2004 with Joc, but as there is no better day trip than this one for Tokyo in this season, so I did this since Yin had never been to Tokyo.

When I went in 2004, it was a very misty day, so I didn't get to see the summit from the 5th station (the 5th station is where all tourist goes up to, any higher than that will have to access by foot).  This time round it was the same situation.  When we left the 5th station, while the bus was going down, the guide quickly pointed out to us that the mist had temporarily cleared and the summit was visible.  We got off the bus to take pictures.  In summer, Mt Fuji is actually dark reddish and brownish in colour.

At the 5th Station

"That's Mt Fuji summit!"
Notice that the mountain is reddish/brownish

After lunch, it was a short cruise on Lake Ashi

Next, we took the ropeway (cable car) to Mt Komagatake.  Again on clear days, we are suppose to be able to see Mt Fuji.  On our way down, we were told that a small speck of green in the sky was Mt Fuji.  The 2nd pic below is the enhanced version (using Instagram).

The day tour ends with taking the bullet train back to Tokyo.   It doesn't feel any different from other train when we are in it.  The difference is actually that it is traveling very fast, and it doesn't stop often, so it only took less than half hour for the return journey, compared to the 2+ hours by bus.

Again, I bought a postcard and mail it to Lynn:

That night, after dinner, while walking back to hotel, we realised that there was a much nearer way to our hotel, and thus this hotel is very accessible from Shinagawa station.  I will highly recommend this hotel to anyone who wants to visit Tokyo.  It has clean room, reasonably good service, good location, and not expensive too.

We stayed on the 32th floor, and this is the view from our room:

On day 3, we slept in, as we are only doing shopping that day.  We had early lunch at 11am.  I took picture of our lunch that day, because it was good.  The chawanmushi has vegetable in it, and the taste was special, which I like a lot.  The sashimi and the teriyaki eel are very fresh and tasty.

That afternoon, the initial plan was to only walk around Shibuya and Roppongi.  We got mostly beauty stuff, as there is great variety.

That evening, we ended up at Shinjuku too.   We went up the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building Observatory which is on the 45th floor.

We were there almost too late, but we were extremely lucky to catch about a handful of shots of the sun setting.  Here are 4 very nice pictures from my humble smartphone :):

On Day 4, we took the limousine bus to the airport.  Breakfast consist of 2 drinks, a coffee and a fresh milk which I got from 7-11 the night before.  They both were yummy...

Home sweet home; a last selfie for the 2 of us..

Hopefully, we will travel again real soon.

A over due update on Lynn

Finally, a super overdue posting.  I realise that I did not write about Lynn much this year.  Even now, I'm quite not sure what I'm going to write about..

The very subtle (difficult to notice) but actually the most significant change this year is that she has reached post-kid and pre-teen milestone.  She is starting to learn on her own, form thoughts and opinions, every single day, without us noticing sometimes.  For example, she wanted to have her own money to buy stuff that she fancy, so she started this pool by doing housework (I pay her 20 cents every time she helps me), selling stuff (e.g. loom bands), and also saving her $1 per month spending allowance.  She started this pool without consulting me, so I step in to set some boundaries when I found out.    Another example is that she arranged with Mabel to stay overnight at her house during the start of Sep school holiday.  She planned a detailed timetable of the activities they wanted to do.   Then whenever she ask me to read or explain the various articles on the back page of the evening chinese newspaper, I can "see" her mind processing the information.

As for school work, she has slacken slightly, as both myself and the new after school care are less syllabus oriented compared to last year.  I do not know if she will still get top 3 this year (ha, the Kiasuism kicking in!).

The misalignment of her teeth is showing some improvement.  I realised that I can only try my best in helping her to become pretty.  Some things are beyond control.  My biggest worry now is that her astigmatism will become uncorrectable.  But like I say, now I know that my duty is to help, it is a lot up to luck or fate.  By the way, I don't believe in fate, I believe in randomness.

Overall, she is still a very very cheerful and fun person to be with.  The 2 of us spend a lot of time together.  We are still very close to each other.  I hope it will stay so for the rest of our journey together.

Some funny conversations that I remembered:
Nowadays, Lynn likes to rebut us with "So?"
Me: Why you keep saying "so?", I should have named you "So Yap", not "Lynn Yap"
Lynn: Then you should be "No Chan".....

Me: You talk non stop like parrot
Lynn: You are "crow's mouth"
Me: What's "crow's mouth"
Lynn: 乌鸦嘴。。。

Lynn: Daddy, why are Vets all skinny?
WK:........
Lynn: 兽医。。。

Some pictures:

During the Sep school holiday stay over, I knew that Mabel likes to doll up, so I did nails for the 3 of us

At J8.  Lynn wanted to play her with her favourite cousin, but Mabel didn't like it.

Miss Vainpot (Mabel) wanted me to take a picture of her pretty finger pressing the lift and post it on FB!

At Ikea, one weekend in Sep

On the Thursday during the week before I start my new job, I did parent volunteering again, to accompany the class to the bird park.  It was a great disappointment because we couldn't proceed due to the rain.  It only started raining very heavily on our way there.  After waiting till slightly after 10am outside the entrance, the rain didn't stop, and the teachers decided to head back to school.  On our way back, the rain stopped.

The kids were upset and disappointed.  Some boys were very vocal, and they crowded around Ms Ang to challenge the decision.  Ms Ang was the stand in that day, when Mdm Ong (Lynn's form teacher) was asked at the last minute to do PSLE invigilation.  Ms Ang is a soft spoken teacher, and doesn't control the kids as well as Mdm does.  So on both the journey there and back, the school bus was turned upside down..  Here are the pictures.

2 classes went, 2.1 and 2.8.  2.1 are kids who are born in the beginning of the year, and 2.8 are year end kids.  May not be due to the slight difference in age, could be just coincidence; somehow, the whole of 2.1 is very quiet, and 2.8 is the exact opposite!

It started pouring on our way there.
A rather cute selfie
When we reach, the kids were given a workbook, which they were supposed to fill in along the tour.
Lynn in her pink rain coat
The work book contained Q&A and quiz about the birds found in the park.
An interesting tree /deco
The boys swamped Ms Ang when told that we were heading back to school.

Finally, here's a few pics of Lynn trying the round patch mask I got from Tokyo.
